Thus begins another skirmish in a far flung corner of the culture war.
Before you saying anything – you’re right. Let’s just get this out of the way right up front: This whole thing is ridiculous. A political blog about tabletop adventure gaming is absurd. We both know it. You would think that if there is anyplace where politics would be a poor fit, it’s inside a silly little game of let’s pretend.
And yet the internet landscape is littered with Pundits of every stripe. You can’t even just avoid the overtly political blogs, as even otherwise interesting bloggers can’t help but toss their own poorly contrived two cents into the arena. Overwhelmingly, these blogs tilt way off to the left side of the political spectrum. We’re talking dyed in the wool Wobblies, pinkos, and collectivists, oh my!
Make no mistake about it – the blogs are just the rotten entrails. This fish is rotting from the head down. Look at the major publishers. From the pointless (and ultimately ineffective) bone thrown to the wolves in the form of The Paragraph to the head-scratching backstory behind Sharda Geltl, the strategy is clear. The snit-faced prudes on the left are relentless in their drive to re-craft role-playing games from a generally apolitical hobby where Red and Blue can get together and have some Purple fun, into yet another weapon to be used to bludgeon anyone who disagrees with their collectivist agenda.
Brief aside: You’ll see a lot of classic quotes on liberty, government, and politics on this blog. Contrary to what you hear at the University these days, those old dead white guys have a lot to teach us.
Let us be clear about something: Though a blip on Hasbro’s radar, this hobby is still big enough for everyone. There’s plenty of room for a wide range of, dare I say, diversity, within role-playing. That envious and bitter leftists want to play games that reflect their myopic worldview is not the problem. The problem is that making room for games and settings that appeal to leftists is not enough for leftists. The problem is that it is never enough. The leftists won’t rest until every game meets their ever increasingly stringent criteria for what makes a game diverse. If you don’t fight them now, they’ll take everything that makes this hobby great and turn it into a grotesque mockery of the hobby we know and love.
Thus far, they’ve had a pretty rum go of things. The left had a solid run of successes what with the news media, Hollywood, publishing, the music industry, and the government educational apparatus from kindergarten to university. As things stand, it looks like this little hobby is slated to go down as another check in the win column for Team Mordor. Well this is one ranger that ain’t going down without making a stand. The war for the heart and soul of the tabletop role-playing game may be lost, but the fight isn’t over.
As good old Edmund Burke, father of modern conservatism his ownself said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Well, this good man is done doing nothing. He’s going to stand up and fight back! He’s going to make a real difference in the fight! He’s going to…
…start a blog?
Yeah, I know. What can I say? It’s a start.
